While the DMC3 style system is slightly antiquated in comparison to DMC4's on-the-fly switching (though the recently released style mod does wonders), they all add an extra ability to deepen the combat, such as Trickster which allows you to dash/teleport, Gunslinger which gives each gun a secondary attack, Swordmaster which adds every melee weapon a second attack, Royalguard which allows you to counter, and more styles that are unlockable, as well as aerial usability, awesome variety of weapons, mid-combo weapon switching and Devil Trigger, DMC3 was a beast for it's time and easily still holds it's own compared to it's peers. Then there's the style system which adds an additional layer of complexity. You're as good and stylish as you allow yourself to be. It's one of few games I can name that is completely free-form and lets you look stylish while you do it, stringing every possible move from start to finish in such a smooth and satisfying way. Through just timing and direction you can bring an enemy airborne, send them straight down, resume a chain, beat down another foe at a distance and throw in a taunt while you're at it to boost your score and show that basically, you're the hot shit.

It encourages you to learn each move and string them together to your best of abilities, maintaining crazy combos while you're at it, and everything is smoothly streamlined through it's clever mapping of pause, directional combos and so forth.
